When my daughter was 12, she dealt with a lot of anxiety. She learned grounding techniques and healthy coping mechanisms, but I also spent quite a bit of time building up her confidence in sharing times she succeeded or important things she learned from not quite reaching her goals. I found myself saying to her often, "Oh but my darling, what if you fly?" when she was scared to try new things. I would say to her, "You already have the wings! It's like a fairy wondering if she can fly. You've got this!"
This image came into my mind of a fairy silhouetted by the moon gaining the courage to test out her lovely wings. I hadn't ever created a layered paper piece, but I could see exactly how it would work and began designing this piece - drawing each layer out backwards and cutting it by hand for 12 layers. Several years later my sister showed me how I could cut my designs by machine and build simple frames out of Baltic birch plywood to hold them and light them up. So here is my creation- from sketch to finished product.
These are made after I receive the order. It can take 7-10 days to make the box and then I'll need to mail it off, so order it with enough time to receive it in time (plan for 10-14 days). Each box comes with a safe led light and plug and a layer of plexiglass to protect the delicate paper layers. The light clips into the back. The finished product is 7.5"x6"x4.5".

And more fun... here's a picture of my friend (Lynde Mott)'s play room that she just painted for her grandkids. It's a little cubby area attached to the side of a room. She's amazing. Wouldn't you just want to play in there all day?
